Nothing quite like life in the Knife.

WestJet's growing network now covers the Northwest Territories

Closer to the Arctic Circle than any other Canadian city, Yellowknife is a booming town that is proud of its past and excited by its future.

Its past, of course, is gold mining. And while the golden days of the rough and ready frontier town certainly put the Knife on the map, today's responsible diamond mining development is putting this city of around 20,000 on the fast track to economic prosperity.

Accurately named Sombre K'e (Where the money is) by its original inhabitants, vibrant Yellowknife attracts a young, diverse and outgoing population with a thirst for wilderness recreation, lively nightlife and the arctic travel experience.

It's location on the north arm of Great Slave Lake makes it a prime fishing, canoeing, kayaking and hiking spot. And year after year, tourists drop in to catch a glimpse of the astronomical phenomenon Aurora Borealis, better know as the Northern Lights.

So next summer, when everyone pulls out the same old pictures of the Eiffel Tower, wow them with the greatest light show on Earth, tell them what bison look like, or how you crammed 20 hours of sunshine into a single day.

Northwest Territories Hotels

The farther north you go (as well as the smaller the settlement), the less choice there will be in accommodations: There may only be one inn, motel or hotel, and shared facilities are likely. Away from the towns and settlements, the hunting and fishing... Reserve all accommodations in advance any time of year, but particularly in the summer.
